The back-to-school season is upon us, and that means it's time to get back into the groove of early mornings, packed lunches, and homework assignments. But don't fret! With the right organization strategies, you can make this transition smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.

I've been through my fair share of back-to-school preparations, so I'm here to share some tips and tricks to help you get organized and start the school year on the right foot.

For our young friends returning to elementary school, it is an exciting time of the year where friends will reunite after a summer apart. After a few fun months in the summer, perhaps the parent realizes something horrific while getting their children ready - the closet is a mess , supplies are scattered and there is a huge unintentional hole in their well-loved pair of jeans. It is easy to feel overwhelmed but roll up your sleeves and let’s get cracking! We can do this together!

Start by creating a designated area in your home as a "command center." This could be a bulletin board, a whiteboard, or even just a section of your kitchen counter. Use this space to keep track of important dates, like school events, parent-teacher conferences, and extracurricular activities. You can also post a weekly meal plan, chore charts, and a to-do list to keep the entire family on the same page.

While you are at this, at the beginning stages, you could begin creating to-do lists which serve as a visual cue for your little ones to help out in the processes.

💡 Pro tip! Get the stars of the show involved in the process! By including your children in this process, it helps to break down and visualize tasks for them and build confidence and self-discipline in themselves.

Now that you have somewhere to give out missions to the little ones, begin coming up with plans to prepare for going back to school!

  1. Declutter! Prepare to donate, recycle or get rid of old materials that your child doesn’t use anymore.

  2. Create zones and establish designated spots for your child to return to. By establishing specific spaces, your little one will begin associate activities with their belongings with particular belonging.

  3. Start sorting out and organizing your clothes. Find the bits and pieces that no longer fit your growing child. Donate or up-cycle these fabrics!

Stressed out in the mornings looking for that lost sock? Or perhaps the grumpy munchkin wants to wear that specific jumper that has grown legs overnight and disappeared ? Gone are those days ! Let’s walk through the closet together!

  1. After getting rid of out doesn’t fit anymore, start taking out everything with your child to see what you are working with.

  2. Sort out and group clothes together. Ensure that each piece is tucked away neatly in organizers.

  3. Hang uniforms and outfits together. Organize them by the day of the week to save yourself a headache during the morning rush.

  4. Label each spot clearly so your child knows where everything belongs.

💡 Pro tip ! Consider getting storage bins for each individual type of clothing. Put the socks in one bin, the t-shirts together in another bin. By providing different boxes for each type, your child will be able to put out and see what options they have and have more autonomy in deciding their outfit for the day!

A child’s environment is extremely important in their formative years. By providing a clean and organized space, it would reduce the stress on the child and allow them to focus on their homework. By laying out the foundation with them, your child can feel more confident in beginning the new year.

💡 Pro tip! Declutter regularly. Encourage your child to declutter their study area periodically. Dispose of unnecessary items, old papers, and broken stationery. A clutter-free space is more inviting and helps maintain focus.

Designate a study space! Choose a quiet, well-lit, and low-traffic space that is free from distractions. No TV until homework is done!

  1. Invest in Proper Furniture. Thrift or invest in a comfortable chair and a sturdy desk. Ensure the furniture is appropriately sized for your child, allowing them to sit comfortably with their feet flat on the floor and maintain good posture while studying.

  2. Organize Supplies. Save time by keeping essential study supplies within arm's reach. Use containers, drawer organizers, and desktop organizers to store pens, pencils, markers, notebooks, and other school materials neatly.

  3. Ensure adequate lighting, preferably natural light during the day. If natural light is not available, provide a good desk lamp with adjustable brightness to reduce eye strain.

  4. Create a schedule that works for your child. Establish a study schedule that aligns with your child's daily routine. Consistency is key. Set specific time slots for study, breaks, and leisure activities to instill discipline.

  5. Organize Digital Resources. For digital learning, organize files, apps, and online resources. Create folders on the computer for each subject, and encourage your child to name files clearly for easy retrieval.

💡 Pro tip! Involve your child in setting up and maintaining their study zone. When they take ownership of the space, they are more likely to keep it organized.

An organized study area can make a world of difference in your child's academic journey. By implementing these simple tips and fostering good organizational habits, you'll provide them with a productive and inspiring space to excel in their studies. Teach a man to fish, or in this case, teach a child to organize and prepare themselves for success for the rest of their lives!

Play Zone

Last but not least - a child's home is never complete without the hub of creativity and imagination - the playroom! It's the place where kids can embark on adventures, build epic forts, and host tea parties for stuffed animals. However, if you've ever stepped into a disheveled playroom, you know that with great play comes great mess. Fear not, because today, because today, we're diving into the world of organizing your playroom and turning it into a space that is functional and fun.

  1. Conduct the 'Great Purge'! Gather your little ones to help decide which of their stuffed animals get to stay and which toys get to go on a new journey.

  2. Create a theme park within your child's play room! Create distinct areas for different types of play, like a cozy reading nook, a block construction zone, and arts and craft zone, a gallery for their art - the possibilities are endless.

  3. Prepare containers to hold your child's imagination! Investing and labelling storage bins clearly will help your child in keeping the area neat and tidy - as well as helping them instill a habit of putting away belongings to where they came from.

So there you have it - the path to a more organized and engaging playroom. With a little creativity and some fun along the way, you'll create a space where play knows no bounds, and organization is the magic key to unlocking boundless adventures.

💡Pro tip! Consider getting furniture that doubles up as storage to help save space!

As we complete our preparations for the new school year, remember that getting organized is a process, not a destination. Not every day will go as planned, and that is okay! Stay positive and adaptable, and don't be too hard on yourself or your child. A little patience and a sense of humour can go a long way!

It may take sometime to find the systems that work best for your family, but with patience and consistency, you'll be well-prepared for the challenges and successes that lie ahead. So, here's to a fantastic school year filled with learning, growth, and lots of wonderful memories!
